In 2005, the city council in the Greek capital Athens set up a battery recycling and sorting project known as Diasbat. And one of the companies involved in the scheme, Germanos, has recently purchased a battery sorting system from Dutch battery recycling company Van Peperzeel of Ermelo in The Netherlands.
Germanos is a market leader in both Greece and the Middle East in mobile telephone systems and services, as well as in the battery field.
In November last year, several people from the Diasbat project visited The Netherlands for a training course on battery sorting. And then in early December, the sorting machine was shipped to Athens for installation. Initial sorting tests on batteries collected by Diasbat - mainly at Germanos stores and at schools - proved to be very promising, according to scheme organisers.
