Would-be scrap fights back
by Editorial staff. September 14, 2007
United States | Damion M. Mosher of Warren County, New York, USA, who put bullets in a vice and whacked them with a hammer to empty the brass shell casings, was hit in the abdomen by a discharged shot. Warren County deputies confirm they were called to Mr Mosher’s home in Lake Luzerne after a bullet penetrated about a 0.5 inches into his abdomen. He was treated in hospital but was later released. No charges were filed.

The 18-year-old told the authorities he was trying to empty the .223-calibre rounds to collect the brass casings for scrap. According to Sheriff Larry Cleveland, around 100 other casings hit by Mr Mosher had ‘fizzled’ but one must have been hit with greater force. It was unclear whether the bullet ricocheted or hit Mr Mosher directly.

An employee of an Albany scrap metal company told ‘The Post-Star of Glens Falls’ newspaper that the business pays US$ 1.70 per lb for scrap brass shell casings. The sheriff confirmed Mr Mosher’s haul amounted to just a few pounds.
