by Editorial Staff. February 01, 2006
The volume of glass collected for recycling in Western Europe grew by 2% or 183 000 tonnes in 2004 - even though container production declined by 1%. The most spectacular growth (+20%) occurred in the UK where collections exceeded 1 million tonnes for the first time. Spain and Italy also showed strong growth of nearly 9% and 4% respectively. Despite a 4% decline in its collection tonnage, Germany remained the clear leader in volume terms.

The weighted average recycling rate for all countries reached an all-time high of 63%.
