Glass recycling continued on its upward trend in 2003, according to figures from European container glass federation FEVE. Collections in the European Union totalled 9.376 million tonnes, 4.6% more than the 8.963 million tonnes collected in 2002. This represents a recycling percentage for 2003 of 60% compared to 59% in 2002Recycling percentages in many European countries exceeded 60% in 2003, with Switzerland topping the list on 96%, followed by Sweden on 92%, and Germany and Belgium both on 88%. Meanwhile, growth rates were particularly strong in the UK and among the Mediterranean countries. Bottom of Europe's glass recycling league was Turkey with a rate of 22%.
