The Chinese government is proposing harsher penalties for those found guilty of illegally importing waste into the country - including custodial sentences of more than five years for the more serious transgressions, according to Xinhua news agency. Officials stated that the aim of the proposal was to stem the flow of illegal imports of waste into China, some of which was entering the country under the guise of raw materials.
