Germany | According to an annual survey by Berlin-based Transparency International, Haiti is perceived to be the most corrupt country in the world. Other corruption hot-spots include Iraq, Sudan, Bangladesh, Uzbekistan and Belarus.
At the other end of the scale, Finland, Iceland and New Zealand emerged as the world’s least corrupt countries, followed by Denmark, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, Australia and the Netherlands. Going further down the list of 144 countries, the USA ranked 22nd, Turkey 60th, Brazil 70th, China 71st, India 74th, the Ukraine 104th and Russia 127th. In 45th place, Italy was the lowest-ranked EU country.
The ‘2006 Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index’ defines corruption as the abuse of public office for private gain and requires at least three corroborative sources.
