Japan | The Fair Trade Commission of Japan has asked Nippon Paper Group Inc, the first major papermaker to admit this month that it had falsified the ratio of used paper contained in recycled paper products, to explain the facts surrounding the practice, sources close to the case told Kyodo News. The FTC will investigate whether the second-biggest papermaker in Japan and several other major paper manufacturers violated a law banning false labelling, the sources say.
Also, an industry group of paper producers convened a first committee meeting aimed at devising strategies for preventing recycling fraud.
‘We are called on to restore public trust in our production practices and we want you to tackle the matter with speed and in earnest,’ says Shoichiro Suzuki, Chairman of the Japan Paper Association, speaking before some 30 committee members. Of the 38 companies comprising the association, 16 have acknowledged overstating the content of used paper in labels on their recycled paper products.
