by Editorial Staff. January 13, 2010
Spain / United Kingdom | Spanish paper and packaging group SAICA is set to begin work on its £290m recycled paper mill at Partington Wharfside in Trafford, United Kingdom. Around 400,000 tonnes a year of 100% recycled paper will be produced at the Partington Mill. The firm will use recovered paper to be manufacture recycled corrugated boxes.

Up to 200 new jobs will be created at the plant when it is operational, as well as during the construction period. Site clearance works at the chosen site started in 2009, building is expected to start early in 2010, with the mill opening in February 2012.

SAICA's Paper Machine 11, a 7.5 metre-wide paper machine, will be the heart of the plant and will operate at speeds of up to 1500m per minute to produce lightweight containerboard. The paper produced by the machine in three and a half hours would cover the 196 mile distance between Partington and London.

SAICA worked with the British Embassy in Spain, UK Trade and Investment, the North West Development Agency and Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council to put the scheme together.

Eduardo Aragües, president of the SAICA Group, said: “This huge investment in the current economic climate is the best message SAICA can send to its UK customers. SAICA is committed to supply its UK customers with the best products, on an environmentally friendly basis.”

UK Business Secretary Lord Mandelson said: ‘Both the scale and the nature of this investment make it a great win for both the North West and the UK, the number one destination for inward investment in Europe.’

He said: ‘This shows great confidence in our economic future and has all the right ingredients. It is a long-term commitment in environmental technology which will be central to the UK's growth strategy.’
