Papierfabrik Palm acquires recycling operations of Abitibi Bowater Europe
by Editorial Staff. February 16, 2010
Germany / United Kingdom | The UK subsidiary of German paper producer Papierfabrik Palm, partially takes over the United Kingdom activities of Canadian paper conglomerate Abitibi Bowater. The Cheshire Recycling plant is the recycling business of AbitibiBowater’s subsidiary Bridgewater Paper, which had filed for administration February 2. Cheshire Recycling, (formerly named AbitiBowater Recycling Europe) will now continue under the umbrella of Palm Paper Limited, a producer of newsprint paper and corrugated board.

The company has been purchased as a going concern for an undisclosed sum, safeguarding all 40 jobs; the name has changed to Palm Recycling. Wolfgang Palm, Papierfabrik Palm's chief executive, says: ‘For Palm Paper, this means long-term, secure supply of fibre for our King's Lynn mill, while Palm Recycling will work with the company's business partners to provide continuity of service from the existing operations team.’

Ron Humphreys, Cheshire Recycling managing director, adds: ‘I am thrilled that we are able to quash any uncertainty about our future so quickly.’ The company provides waste management services to local authorities throughout the UK and operates from Ellesmere Port, Cheshire.

Production at AbitibiBowater's UK-based subsidiary Bridgewater Paper Company (BPCL) has now ceased and some 300 staff have been temporarily laid off at the recycled newsprint mill following its move into administration.
