Backing for early EU mercury export ban
by Editorial staff. July 16, 2007
EU | The Environment Committee of the European Parliament has voted to bring forward by seven months - to December 1 2010 - a proposed ban on EU mercury exports. Voting on draft legislation from the European Commission, the committee also extended the ban to cinnabar ore and other mercury compounds containing more than 5% by weight of the metal. It added a mercury import ban from 2010 and voted for tougher mercury storage provisions.

The committees amendments will now be scrutinised by the European Parliaments plenary body.
