Axe EU e-cycling targets, says Orgalime by Editorial staff. March 01, 2007
In a position paper released in February, the European Engineering Industries Association representing the interests of the mechanical, electrical, electronic, metalworking and metal articles industries, has called on the EU to drop electronic waste recovery and recycling targets in favour of broader ‘environmental objectives’ offering companies more flexibility in achieving green goals.
Known as Orgalime, the association was commenting to the European Commission review of the EU’s Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) which began in mid-2005. The directive had been implemented inconsistently across the EU and so it would be ‘premature’ to increase the current 4 kg per person per year collection target for 2008, according to Orgalime. The organisation is particularly keen to see harmonised registration and reporting requirements.
