China’s boxes piling up in the USA
by Editorial staff. August 01, 2006
China is shipping such a high volume of goods to the USA that, in many circumstances, it is proving cheaper to build new containers with low-cost labour and leave the original boxes in the USA rather than to send them home empty, according to a report from the Reuters news agency.

Hundreds of empty containers are said to be stacked alongside the track near the Norfolk Southern Corporation’s Portlock rail yard in Chesapeake, Virginia. They ‘look ready to board ship on the US East Coast and head back to China, but they are going nowhere’, Portlock’s Trainmaster Brian Stanley is reported to have said.
