New product | A new, front-loading 125-tonne metal compactor briquettor has been introduced by Kurt Manufacturing of the USA. Known as the Chipmunk Model 1200FL, the compactor offers high output as well as a number of energy-efficient features, says the company.
The Chipmunk delivers a compaction ratio of 8:1 and also reclaims expensive cutting fluids. With an output capacity of up to 1200 lb per hour (544 kg) of aluminium chips (depending on chip geometry), the Chipmunk compacts both ferrous and non-ferrous chips into dense 8.9 cm by 3.2 cm briquettes. It can also compact steel/ductile iron chips at a rate of up to 2300 lb per hour (1043 kg).
The Chipmunk’s front-load design utilises a hydraulically-driven infeed auger which separates most unwanted solids from the chips prior to the compacting cycle. The system incorporates a mechanical kinetic energy drive that, according to Kurt, makes it extremely energy efficient. Compared to a 50 HP hydraulically-driven compactor system, the Chipmunk is said to use only a fraction of the power and yet produces up to 50 000 PSI compaction force to convert metalworking chips into dense, dry pucks. These pucks are automatically discharged via a chute into a container ready for shipment to the recycler. A floor tray holds recovered coolant.
