Product news | US-based Harris Waste Management Group has launched a new, more powerful version of its well-proven Piranha closed-end baler.
This semi-automatic machine converts a wide variety of recyclable materials into export-size bales and is said to be ideal for use in material recycling facilities (MRFs), distribution centres and smaller processing operations.
The new Piranha has a single compression cylinder rather than the twin units of its predecessor. Exerting a compression force of 87 tonnes, this simpler single-cylinder arrangement is claimed to give superior transmission of force to the ram which, along with the floor of the charging box, is lined with abrasion-resistant plate for longer machine life.
The new unit boasts a hydraulically-operated bale door mechanism as standard; safety switches on the door relieve pressure from the main ram as soon as the door opens, and prevent bale ejection before the door is in a safe and correct position. Controlled via an Allen Bradley plc unit, the new Piranha also has a short-stroke feature to reduce cycle times, and should an overcharge occur it automatically makes three attempts to cut material protruding above the gatherer before alerting the operator.
The machine’s small footprint of 5.5 metres by 2.4 metres and its low installed power (20 HP) mean it can be housed easily in limited spaces with low power availability. It is supplied with a standard hopper flange for manual or shovel feeding; optional equipment includes in-feed conveyors for either above- or below-ground installation.
The Harris product range includes two-ram, horizontal and vertical balers for paper, board, non-ferrous metals and plastics, as well as shears, balers and shredders for ferrous metals.
