According to the company, the advantages of a single-shaft shredder are well known: it is possible to fill a feed hopper which is then gradually emptied by means of a hydraulically-operated ram without the assistance of operators. But Herbold adds that it has not been possible until now to obtain small granule sizes with such shredders: often a 15 or 20 mm screen has been the lower limit, making necessary the introduction of intermediate conveying and a secondary granulator in order to achieve 4 to 8 mm granule sizes and a satisfactory throughput.

But this outcome is now possible in a single size-reduction step using Herbold’s HB series granulator, the company claims. The granulator represents the combination of a feed hopper and a hydraulic ram with a granulator. Owing to the special design of the grinding chamber and to the high cutting frequency, it is now possible to transform bales and cut open film rolls, as well as to process bulk hollow bodies such as whole IBC containers and rainwater-collecting basins in an economic way.

Intermittent feeding of large quantities of material is possible without the need for dosed feeding or the risk of material becoming jammed in the grinding chamber. Once the material has been fed in and the hopper filled, no further operator involvement is required.

According to Herbold, the main advantage of this new development is its space-saving design since only one size-reduction step is necessary. Knife changes and maintenance are also reduced. Compared with a two-step solution and a granulator fed by gravity, it also offers a more favourable energy balance.

Depending on the application, different rotor types are available for the HB series. If requested, the granulator can also be delivered as a turn-key package solution with the necessary ancillary equipment such as a suction unit with big bag filling station or feeding via an automatic lifting/tilting device.
